Add low-point results

A fleet series combines several races. Under low-point scoring, first place earns 1 point, second earns 2, and so on. A lower total is better.

For example, places 2, 3 and 2 total 7 points. Places 1, 6 and 4 total 11 points. Without a discard, the consistent first set wins. Retirement and disqualification can receive different points under the event rules.

Read the event documents

The notice of race and sailing instructions describe the event. Check the class, course, schedule, start procedure and scoring before entering. Also check any discard, qualification and tie-break rules.

SailPolars fleet series use Appendix A tie-breaks. Team events use their stated team format. In a team race, places are summed for each team. A lower sum wins. A level sum goes to the team without first place.

Review one decision

A race review is most useful when it leads to one change. Look at start timing, manoeuvres, penalties and route choices. Choose one item to practise before the next race.

Practice scores and official racing results serve different purposes. A training score does not affect your race ranking. Official team races do not rate individual sailors from their team places.

Practise this idea

  1. Open Race a series in the sailing school.
  2. Add the example scores before reading the answer.
  3. Read an event's notice of race in Cups.
  4. Practise the class and course that the event uses.
  5. After racing, choose one drill from the debrief.

Avoid this mistake

Do not assume that the most race wins always wins the series. Apply the stated scoring, discard and tie-break rules.

Check your understanding

Can you explain why a consistent series can beat one win and two poor results? Confirm the event's discard policy before calculating its winner.
